HOW TO FIGHT HAIR LOSS IN SUMMER.

If on holiday or when you get back you notice you are experiencing more hair loss than usual, there’s nothing to worry about, it’s just our hair’s natural way of renewing itself. In the summer our hair comes under great stress. However, if you follow a couple of simple rules, use the right products and follow a healthy diet, you can minimize hair loss, a situation which is luckily temporary. Here are some tips to minimize damage and make sure your hair grows back strong and healthy.
WHY DOES OUR HAIR FALL OUT IN THE SUMMER?
In the summer your scalp is more exposed to the sun and the effects of oxidative stress are greater than at any other time of the year. As the word “oxidative” suggests, the process is triggered by oxygen, along with other causes: an unhealthy diet, pollution, smoking and stress. The result is excessive production of free radicals. Other causes are the extremely dry and humid conditions we experience in the hot months and high temperatures which alter the balance of our skin. To get a better understanding of what is going on, it’s important to realise that our hair goes through three stages during its life cycle: anagen (when it grows), followed by catagen (when growth slows down) and finally telogen (when hair falls). In summer the anagen stage is shorter, so the time it takes to reach the telogen (hair loss) phase is reduced. Our hair comes under attack on many fronts:
- chlorine in swimming pools, which damages the hair’s hydrolipidic film and therefore its natural protection; - salt, which penetrates deep into the hair fibre, weakening it; - using brushes which aren’t suitable for our hair type or overly aggressive brushing; - using hair dryers and straighteners at high temperatures which dry out our hair, causing breakage and split ends; - cosmetic treatments like bleaching without using the right products to protect lengths.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
As we have already mentioned, hair loss is temporary so there’s nothing to worry about. However, by following a couple of best practices, you can help minimize damage and ensure your hair is beautiful and shiny.
1) Treatments. Did you know you can undergo treatments to strengthen the anchorage of the hair to the scalp and stimulate growth even in summer? Medavita’s Lotion Concentrée is an anti-loss treatment* which encourages microcirculation, is a powerful antioxidant and a highly effective adjuvant in preventing hair shedding. Don’t miss the latest promotion. If you purchase one of the three anti-loss kits* on offer, inside you will find two great complimentary products: the shampoo and mask from the new Oxygen Detox range , formulated to purify the scalp and hair from smog and micro-dust pollution. These products work in synergy to effectively cleanse the scalp and hair, maximizing the action of the Lotion Concentrée treatment.

2) Protect yourself from the sun. Our hair needs just as much protection against UVA and UVB rays as our skin. So we recommend using Solarich Miracle Hair Cream Oil 10 in 1. When sprayed over hair, it protects it from the sun’s rays and preserves the structure and colour of the hair fibre. Its protective action is boosted if used with a restructuring after-sun shampoo and mask whose intensive hydrating and nourishing action protects the hair structure, making it beautifully shiny and radiant.
3) Follow a healthy diet. Water is, without a doubt, the most important ingredient in our beauty regimen as it hydrates our whole organism. We should all drink at least one litre of water a day, especially if it’s hot. Our diet should also include iron-rich food like meat, oily fish like sardines, mackerel and anchovies, legumes, eggs, green leafy vegetables, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, rocket, apricots and fish, without forgetting the appropriate intake of vitamin C which fixes iron in the blood and is found in kiwis, tomatoes, peppers and strawberries.
4) Cover your head. A bandana or band in natural fabric like cotton is extremely useful. As well as protecting your scalp, it will ensure you’re always looking trendy, even on the beach. Adopting the right behaviour and taking the necessary care of your hair are key to keeping it looking beautiful, shiny and healthy at all times. *Anti-loss – Adjuvant treatment to prevent hair loss.
