A LITTLE HISTORY.

In ancient times oils were the precious beauty aids of Egyptian, Greek and Roman women. Egyptians imported essential oils and minerals for unguents from the East 3,500 years before Christ. Priests prepared and preserved sesame oil, olive oil and almond oil in black alabaster jars. These substances were used to massage the body after bathing, to preserve it. Queen Cleopatra spread olive oil over her face, body and hair, mixed with essences, to preserve her legendary beauty. Oils were also used for hair care. The classic wavy style of Greek women was preceded by a ritual that involved applying olive oil masks. In ancient Rome, the cosmetae were specialised slaves who had the task of preparing ‘fresh’ cosmetics. There were lots of olive-oil based recipes: for example, one anti-ageing oil included chestnut leaves and ivy leaves that were immersed in olive oil and not ‘disturbed’ for at least two hours. One hair strengthening treatment contained a mixture of olive and castor oil, together with a perfumed essence that formed a kind of lotion and was applied to the hair once a day. Today, formulations have become much more complex and functional compared to simple oils. Liquid oils have never disappeared from cosmetics and have been re-evaluated, not only for their countless skin properties but also because natural products have been rediscovered and promoted, due to the new understanding and environmental awareness of consumers.

WHY OILS ARE GOOD FOR HAIR.

Oils used in cosmetics are rich in essential fatty acids and are therefore fundamental for the nourishment they bring, as well as maintaining an excellent level of hydration. Oil keeps hair soft and healthy, protects it from external agents and strengthens and regenerates it. It is an excellent barrier against free radicals, which lead to weakened hair, and helps prevent split ends. It also guards against unsightly frizz, especially for curly hair, and makes hair shiny. Its action restores reserves of water and fat and, as a consequence, reinforces the proteins that make up hair – especially keratin. IDOL is not only the utmost in creative styling, but also protection and nourishment for hair. The main ingredients are essential fatty acids, but there are also fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin D. As it is structurally compatible with hair and skin, it reinforces the lipid barrier, combating dryness, maintaining or restoring elasticity, softness, compactness, tone and hydration.
